I saw
this piece on 60 Minutes last night, or rather the second half of it, which was about Facebook and its baby-CEO. There's some discussion about the onslaught of marketing on Facebook, which seems to be getting worse every hour. I knew that already, but! what I didn't know was that Facebook communicates with outside sites, like Amazon, and will post your activity on those sites in your news feed,
unless you opt out. An example cited in the tv piece: a man bought a diamond ring for his wife but she found out about the surprise gift through his news feed. That's fucked up! Imagine if you bought a book on Amazon about living with herpes or filing for bankruptcy or some other incredibly personal topic? It was enough to make me want to pop that baby-CEO in his wealthy, unethical mouth.
I was so pissed and violated that I wanted to cancel my profile immediately, but who am I kidding? I'm addicted. The connection to my long distance friends is too important. So I'm staying on it, but I did increase all of my security settings including opting out of that "sharing external links" bullshit. And I also took out all my favorites shows, music, etc, because I feel like Facebook just wants that info to sell it to marketing companies. Not that they can't use other facts about me, but I want to give them as little as possible to profit from.
humph!
