check my shades
I finally dusted off the old sewing machine and proved to myself that I can still stitch straight. My living room has been aching for proper shades since the day I moved in. Thanks to mom for buying the supplies and for general encouragement, I now have privacy! color! a cooler apartment in the afternoon! and satisfaction of a job well done!!
Next: more shades! for the kitchen.
Thanks to Tselanie for the photo-documentation.

Pretty.Cute.
I just discovered Alice Ritter. I know the British schoolgirl look isn't exactly innovative or anything, but bloody hell, I can't help loving it.

SONNENZIMMER
Speaking of m+c, it's thanks to them that I have finally paid attention to the work of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi. They're two Chicago artists who also run a desgin and print studio called SONNENZIMMER. I've seen some of their posters at Flatstock, but, well, you know I really don't pay attention at those things. too hot. too much dust between my toes.
Anyways, Mejay bought Chris one of Nick Butcher's orignial paintings this week and she invited me along to the studio while she picked it out. Not only was the work I saw beautiful but this guy Nick was a sweetheart. Very welcoming and humble. I didn't get a chance to meet Nadine, but I did get to se some of her paintings, which were also lovely.
There's a difference betwen their work, but I think you'll also see similarites. Shared color palettes and love of negative space. I think he's got more layers though.. maybe. His stuff seems a little more textured and more scribbly. I'm going to stop describing it because I don't really know what I'm talking about. So here are pictures!

The work makes me think specifically of Amy and Stacy Elaine, if either of you are reading.

Lars and the Real Girl
Heads up Stef - This is got something for you.
Gosling's certainly entertaining, the story looks unusual but endearing, and I love Emily Mortimer. But what excites me the most about this flick is getting a substantial dose of Paul Schneider.

I think I would marry this dude in a skinny minute. Or at least pretend like we're married. yup. in a heartbeat.

Another movie themed post from Apartment Therapy, this one about the Beatles' Help! This time they highlight the awesomeness of the boys' shared living space and how current it seems. This apartment blew me away when I first saw this movie when I was 12, and now I'm in full covet mode.

It'd be hard to pick which Beatle to shack up with, but I think ultimately I'd go with John. The sunken bed is cozy and, of course, he's got the TV.

I've checked this out from the berry. I will be taking notes. and swooning.

Dance Fever
Part 1 of the So You Think You Can Dance finale is tonight. for 2 hours.
The second part is tomorrow. for 2 hours.
I will not be taking calls between 7-9 p.m central either day.
I'm rooting for Danny (Danny!) but this was my favorite routine from last week performed by Sabra and Neil, who I love, too.

I saw these on decor8, and I warming - har har dee har!! - to the idea of putting something like this in my non-working, rather large for the room fireplace. I would like to buy some of these, but you know, I'm broke. Maybe I could... make them?
If money was no object I like to think I'd buy the pink..
..but I'd probably wuss out and get the more subdued blue.

Inspiring or Depressing?
Things Other People Accomplished When They Were My (Soon-to-Be) Age:
Penniless and unemployed, Buckminster Fuller decided against suicide, resolving instead to live out the rest of his life as an experiment to see what one person could do to help humanity.
By the time of his death at age 32, Alexander the Great had conquered almost the entire known world.
Composer, conductor and painter E. T. A. Hoffmann began to write the tales for which he is now primarily remembered.
English artist and poet William Blake wrote and illustrated "Songs of Innocence."
Johann Rudolf Wyss wrote "The Swiss Family Robinson."
English parson Thomas Robert Malthus wrote his "Essay on the Principles of Population."
Scott Thompson and his wife traveled to California and climbed the highest peak in the continental United States, Mount Whitney.
Don Simpson got hit in the eye by his karate instructor and bled all over the place.
I'm positive I can bleed out my eyeballs.

Hello Kitty disciplines macho men

BANGKOK - Thai police said Monday they have recruited Hello Kitty, the moon-faced global icon of cuteness, as a new disciplinary tool for officers found engaging in "inappropriate" behaviour.
Officers who speak too aggressively to civilians, who fail to turn off their engines when they park their cars, or commit other minor violations of proper conduct will be forced to wear bright pink Hello Kitty armbands as punishment, police Colonel Pongpat Chayaphan told AFP.
Previously such offences were punished by a written reprimand, but Pongpat said that seemed to do little to deter future breaches of conduct.
He said he hoped the Hello Kitty armbands would shame officers into shaping up.
"I chose this symbol because it is pink and easy to see," he said.
In addition to wearing the cartoon cat on their sleeves for one day, the officers will also have to be accompanied by whoever is the deputy chief on duty for the day, Pongpat added.
"This is intended to engender their feelings of guilt," Pongpat added.
Second offences will be dealt with by a disciplinary panel that could decide to detain the misbehaving officers, he said.
