for the record

ok. reviewed some photos. the primamry contenders are the ones I think we're all in agreement on.

Michelle - I'm really gonna be rootin' for her, nothing again the sister.

CarriDee, in all her mannish, goofy, awkward glory.

AJ - still though, she needs to get over herself, and over the hair color.

And the long shot is Anchal, I think. Tyra, loooooves her. She's the "heavy" model this season (jeez), but I'm hoping she keeps pulling these kinds of pictures out of her "fat" ass:

Not my pic, personally, but I think Melrose is in this 'til the final 2. It's the way she's getting editted. A bit like Eva cycle 3 (bitch come humble beauty) but I'm not buying the "beauty" part yet.

Y'all remember this story?
SICHUAN, China -- One zoo in southwest China has its hands full with 16 baby pandas. The Sichuan Wolong Panda Protection and Breed Center is dealing with the results of a breeding boom -- 16 pandas have been born since July, 2005.

These people have the best job in the world (!)

more boots

The first pair - no good. I can't do ankle boots. I knew I probably couldn't pull it off, but I wanted to try. The make my calves look about 4" long.

I'm going shopping again this weekend, but I'm doing some more internet browsing in the meantime. Here are a couple that are catching my eye, in case you all feel like commenting.

This would be a lot easier if you would just move down here so you can go shopping with me in person.

Hold on Tight

Of the many things I like about this commercial, I'm really tickled that it starts by saying "YOU are the New American Society," while they're zooming in on a Brit.

Picking a Pod

K, I've decided that I'm going to go fo it. I'm going to buy and iPod. Now I just need to decide which one to get. I'm leaning towards the black 8GB Nano, but it's the same price as the 30 BG regular. The slimness really appeals to me, though. Or maybe I should just get the 4 GB (in green, I think).

Any advice from someone who already has one?

Jean

This is Gallery 101 where Howie has 'Of Manga and Mongrels' Art show up right now. Now I'd always wondered about the lady splashed up on display on the top half of the gallery. Jean is a portrait of the Honorable Madame Jean Augustine a public figure in Ottawa: community organizer, role model, educator. The first black woman elected to Parliament in 1993, Augustine was Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from 1994-1996; Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women from 2002-2004; and Chair of numerous groups, including three terms as Chair of the National Liberal Women’s Caucus. From the gallery 101 site:

How we each interpret the image will have to do with the assumptions we make about representation, assumptions that are at times difficult to admit or discuss. This portrait seems out of place in the sense that it is removed from the political context in which Augustine normally is depicted, exhibited in the realm of public space, and outside of the context of the art gallery. Furthermore, images of this scale are most familiar to us in the context of advertising. Many people will look casually at Augustine’s portrait and imagine that it is related to a message about diversity and/or gender. They will not be wrong in thinking this, as many of the questions that originate from Augustine’s portrait stem from the rarity in our culture of portraits of black women.

Neat-o.

Huffalo

I found Huffalo first on cut+paste and then on etsy. I want to buy some earrings, but I can't decide which ones. So many are standing out to me. There's:

silver tsunami (etsy)

blush (cut+paste)

ocean (cut+paste)

And I could list more, but you get the idea.

What I'd really love are some necklaces from her, so I emailed her via etsy and she said she could probably hook m up. So now I have to decide which drop I'd like for a pendant. Any suggestions?

Marjane Satrapi

Good news: Satrapi is reading at Quimby's this month!
Bad news: I will be in Ottawa.

NOT that being in Ottawa is bad news in and of itself. You know that's not what I mean. What I mean is that I wish that this lady were coming to my town just a few days later. I could get her to sign all of my books. that she wrote, of course. And I could tell her how awesome she is and generally fan-gush all over her.

But I guess the ultimate good news is that she's got a new book coming out, Chicken with Plums.

(And the supreme, ultimate good news being that I will be in Ottawa soon!!)

Detention

Why is that every time I hear about Saddam getting kicked out of court I think about a kid getting kicked out of class for cutting up? I want to say it's like he's being sent to the principal's office, but I guess it'd be more like being told to stick his nose in the corner. Or maybe it's more like being sent to his room for mouthing off to dad at the dinner table. It just always sounds benign and exasperating, and definitely like they're not getting a dang thing accomplished.

I know, I know, it's par for the course. I shouldn't be surprised. And I'm not. But still, it's the only news we ever hear about the trial - "Saddam ticks off court". Don't you find it silly, too?

Vanity Sizing

I had trouble squeezing into a size L skirt in Paris, but in London the XS skirts hung off my hips. Here, I'm somewhere between a 4 and an 8 (depending on the store). And I haven't gained or lost any significant amount of weight between my fitting room adventures. This article explains it all.

Feel free to add any you like. If you don't know how, I can either tell you or do it for you. This is a breakdown of who everyone is:

amy alice - amy alice, of course.

Sloth - minx's kinda brother-in-law

c-conner-run - my sister, Catherine

Asteroidea Press - Megan Butcher

Matilda Zine - Jennifer Whiteford

Pudgy Pigeon Enterprises - Stacy Elaine Dacheux, a Birmingham friend living in LA

More food matter. This one in particular is for the minx. Really good article on the well-fed network that looks at essential items for a well stocked pantry that lends itself to easy-to-prepare meals. Danielle's approach to mix and match cooking is simple, straightforward and makes me hungry.

ANTM Week 1: From Zero to Bee-otch In Sixty Seconds

If Babycakes were to have a brother site, then Sloth would be it. As (faux) sibling sites, Babycakes and Sloth have a lot of common, but the strongest link of all is our mutual obsession with ANTM.

Here's a preview of his writeup:
We're back, bitches! America's Next Top Model Cycle 7 kicked off last night in a two-hour orgy of overconfidence, forced friendliness and amateurish poses, and I of course licked up every second like it was an ice cream cone made of puppies. It's hard to believe this show has gone through seven seasons* already, because that's like five decades in modelling years.

Week 1

A homely bunch, to be sure. I'm officially not picking any of them yet, although I'm kind of surprised that I like the tomboy twin. Her bulemia shot reminded me of that Fiona Apple video (which I always hated, but still, I liked the photo).

And while I didn't like the promos with the twins, I find I'm rooting for them now because Ty-Ty's so cleary trying to pit them against eachother. Bitch.

If only my gut were covered in fur..

This is what I would have: Sea Urchin Belly.

We can only hope this trend makes it to an episode of ANTM!

Renegade Tidbits

This is a list of folks I met and things I saw last weekend. To be honest, I only did a quick run through one time, grabbing flyers of things that caught my eye. There was just too much to see, and I also wanted to stay at my tent as much as possible to draw people in with my winning charms.

Okay, first here is a picture of my display:

There are more uploaded on flickr, but it's all of my booth. This was the 2nd day set up featuring the V formation which I was really pleased with. The first day we did the standard L which wasn't as successful. The V is more inviting (one of life's universal truths).

Please note the little individual packets I made for the hand-stitched pins. I'm very happy with them!

Now I'll talk a bit about my neighbors, which were the crafters I got to know the most, obviously.

Behind me there were Christy (a_bardis) and Shannon (Patina) from Atlanta. They were incredibly sweet and helpful, enlisting their boyfriends to help me set up the tent when the calendar boys were running late. They run a semi-annual craft event in Atlanta called the Indie Craft Experience, which I may apply for, and Christy is one of the editors on Get Crafty (and here is her blog). I couldn't find pictures of their items online, but I did buy a brooch from Christy (which I will post a picture of as soon as my camera want to cooperate.

One my next door neighbors was BANG, a company run by soon-to-be husband and wife Maggie and David (apologies if I got his name wrong!), who are from Brooklyn. They make screen-printed shirts and totes as well as some glass cut jewelry. Again, they don't seem to have items posted online yet, but I traded with them and will show you what I got as soon as the powershot stops being bitchy.

Some other new favorites I saw were:

coco baby - fun/cute baby wear. There was a ton of baby stuff this year, as seems to be the trend. coco baby stood out to me because I found their items well designed and adorable without being too precious. Plus they had their baby with them, and she was all smiles and bright blue eyes. She was Quite the sales-lady.

j.marie textiles - It's too bad the picture doesn't do her work justice. Her items were beautiful - hand dyed and screened silk made into delicate purses, ties, and scarves. Unfortunately out of my price range, but the woman herself was lovely and sweet, and bought 5 of my hand-stitched pins! (Her compliments helped bolster me up from my disappointing sales because I really respected her work).

Urban Spectacles of Wood - This man was only 2 booths away from mine and I really regret not getting a picture of his display. It was a wooden structure that held up a bike frame horizontally. The wheels of the bike were fitted with circular shelves and this is where he displayed his glasses, which were some of the coolest I have ever seen. Again, a price that was out of my league stopped me from buying, but I grabbed his card in case I win the lottery one day. He said he often works with clients, taking picture of their faces and then making custom frames suited to their features. Most were made out of rich hardwoods, but he also had a pair made from vinyl records.

Kitty Genius - I really regret not buying anything here. I thought of you guys a bunch at this booth. I wanted to buy gifts, but making a choice was just too hard. I'm serious. Look at this. and this. and this. How could you pick just one thing?

That's about it. There were a lot of folks with good stuff, but I don't have the time to post about them all. I mainly wanted to mention the new vendors I hadn't seen before and who I found particularly delightful.

(As for posting pictures of the products, Blogger was being difficult. Sorry.)

Hey Mimi, look familiar?

Teemu

"Anything can be cool now. You just need to believe in what you are doing or wearing. It's superfree now. Anything goes. Nothing is out."

Ulla

Jani

"The purpose of my style: to get girls' attention. It has worked well this far. To get girls a boy needs to have J-P Gaultier perfume, a foundation and a good hair cut."

The Muff and Täxi

"I adore myself", says The Muff, the singer and guitarist of Naked, the only band in Finland with a confetti machine of it's own.

"I adore Freddy Mercury", says Täxi.

Everything Always Works Out

You may be aware of how much I was stressing out about finding someone to help me man my Renegade booth this weekend. My neighbors offered to lend a hand, which was incredibly generous of them, but even so I was going to be short a helper on Saturday.

Well no more! Through a friend of a friend of a woman I'm on a listserv with, I have found full-fledged booth partners. They're a couple of guys who will be selling an Election Day Advent Calendar:

This gives me so much relief because now I have folks to work with who are as invested in selling as I am (check their professional-looking site) and who will help me spilt the hetfty fair fee. And doesn't the calendar look neat?!

Update: oooo, they're big-wigs! Boing Boing has talked up the calendar.

Also, within minutes of speaking with me, they had this posted on their site. This is going to make my shit look good!

Clell Tickle: Indie Marketing Guru

(reposting this because the original didn't get along with the Babycakes layout in Firefox).

Ware does Voltaire

From a group of Penguin Deluxe Classics that have been given new covers.

I wish I could actually read Ware's bubbles, but the scans are all too small. I guess I'll have to go to a book store.

Also, there are some other lovely covers in that group, but not all of the descriptions tell me who drew them and it's driving me crazy. For instance, I know I know this illustrator but I'm a little too unsure to name them...

Sammy Harkham, maybe?

I'm officially deciding not to follow this trend.
(And for the record, I've thrown that shirt out.)

But, to prove that I am not a trend snob, I'm thinking I may try an obi-style belt.

Marc me over

I've been wanting a makeover for a while. I'm having trouble reconciling the girly with the grown-up and the fun with the sophisticated. The fashion gods heard my cry for help and their answer is a MARC by Marc Jacobs Jersey Dress. It can be mine for $358 USD. Pricey, but it can save me from looking like a teenager at work.

Gimme some cushion!

So just when the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain bans underweight models from their fashion week, Australian Vogue removes coverage of MoraJoara from their website for featuring "regular-sized" models. Apparently MoraJoara was warned by Australian Fashion Week organizers to use standard models, but the Aussie designer decided to go ahead with her fleshy friends anyway.

Hel Looks

I'm all inspired by Mimi's fashion post! I'm pleased to introduce Hel Looks, the Finnish answer to Japanese Streets. It's a nice mix of thrifty chic, avant garde, romantic euro vs. nyc hipster, and punk. Plus, the Finnish girls seem to have fuller bodies which is refreshing.
